Christina Smith receives 2018 FURI fellowship for undergrad research

Posted on

Congratulations to Christina Smith (Undergrad, Biomedical Engineering) who will receive a stipend, materials and supplies, and an opportunity for conference travel support to complete a project in the Haynes lab this summer. Sponsorship is provided by the Fulton Undergraduate Research Initiative (FURI). This will be her second FURI award since joining the Haynes lab.

Christina joined the Haynes lab as an undergraduate volunteer in Spring 2017. She worked with graduate student Stefan Tekel to learn techniques in molecular cloning and protein analysis. She remained in the Haynes lab in Summer-Fall 2017 to participate in the International Genetically Engineered Machines (iGEM) competition; her first FURI award supported her work in contributing to the team’s effort to develop new tools for bacterial signaling. Her new FURI fellowship (Summer 2018) will enable her to assist with finalizing data and figures for a new paper to report the scientific discoveries from the iGEM project.
